Hudson Highlands (Day 65-66)

So exciting to have our first guests on the Loop. Duke and Donna are longtime sailors we met in New Bern over the winter.  They were a great help as we navigated up the Hudson River and learned how to maneuver the locks ( next blog.) This is us at Trophy Point where Mike was our personal tour guide on campus.
But first some photos from Day 1 with the new crew. We decided to leave Half Moon Bay Marina because we couldn’t get a rental car and we really wanted to show our friends West Point.
Mike had gone on a field trip to this nuclear power plant while a cadet at West Point. It brought back memories. We saw this really cool retired fire boat at the fuel dock.  This was one of the many NYFD vessels to rescue passengers off the plane that went down in the Hudson. We were told they also we’re working the river on 9/11.

Even though it was a cloudy day, the trip upriver was beautiful. You can see why the Hudson River school of painting style developed.
Brought back memories for both of us as we passed flirtation walk where Mike kissed me for the very first time.
The Cadet Chapel is an excellent example of Military Gothic architecture and was built in 1908-1910. You can read more about it here.
The windows were begun in 1911 but the side windows have been donated by classes over the years.
The organ is also a memorial gift that has been added to over the years and is now the largest church organ in the world.
Across the river from West Point is Bannerman Castle. Located on Pollepel Island, it was constructed as a storage facility for a weapons dealer. It surprisingly blew up before it was completed.
Newburgh was a rock and roll  marina so we left after our West Point tour and headed up river to Poughkeepsie. It was sure great having help with the lines and the fenders!
Our goal here was to bike ride on the Walkway across the  Hudson.  Unfortunately only Donna and I made the trek as Mike threw out his back getting the bike off the boat.  Donna and I appreciated the magnificent views.
The guys did get to see the bridge lit up.
