Boca Chica-Friends from Virginia Days visit (Days 244-250)

We were so excited to have our friend Ellen and her boyfriend Louie come down from Northern Florida for a visit. Ellen’s daughter Blair was Jackie’s best friend.

We were able to offer them a beautiful sunset nearly every night!

We enjoyed dipping our toes in the water at the beach while Mike entertained us with his kiteboard antics.

Mike and Ellen took the Brownie out looking for lobster in the harbor. No luck though.

We spent a day in Key West together with lunch at the Wharf, and walking about town.  We stopped in the Key West Museum of Art and History at the Custom House. It has a fabulous exhibit on the railway and a local artist, Santiago’s sketches for Earnest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.  We also had drinks at several popular spots.  We stopped at the Southernmost Point Brew Pub, Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, Rick’s, Captain Tony’s (Hemingway’s hangout) and finished with happy hour at the Mansion. Needless to say, our “Duvall Crawl” left us a little giddy.

After a day at Bahia Honda State Park where Ellen, Mike and I all took the Brownie out for a short dive. Then we stopped for dinner at the Geiger Key Fish Camp on the way home.

Oh , and another pretty sunset😁

There were a lot of iguanas there, this guy is especially colorful.

He was not at all afraid of us.

This is Marvin Key about 11 miles from Boca Chica.  There is a great sand bar there at low tide. Mike took Louis out there while Ellen and I went for a bike ride to the Geiger Fish Camp.

The Marina had a Super Bowl Party.  In addition to Ellen and Louis, our old neighbor Bob joined us.  It was quite a coincidence that he just happened to be in Key West for the week with some old Navy buddies.

We also met him in town at Blue Heaven for Breakfast. If in Key West you must stop at there at least once.  Be prepared to wait to be seated.

Mike and I were able to go back out to Marvin Key for a relaxing day on the water.  Mike found this place with a kiteboarding guide 12 years ago when we came down for a visit.

I decided I definitely wanted to come back as it wasn’t quite low tide this visit, but it was still a really cool spot.

We hated to leave but it was important to get back to the big boat before sunset.  Navigating out in the keys can be a little tricky.

”He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate— bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts.“
